Fix Error Code 0X80070026 When Updating Windows 10.
Method 1: Perform System File Checker (SFC) scan.
Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).
In the Command Prompt, type the following command sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.
(Optionally )Once the SFC is complete, check your hard drive for potential errors.
If the issue persists then follow the below Method 2.
Method 2: DISM Commands.
Follow the below steps:
1. Press Windows + X keys and click Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Type the following commands in command prompt one by one and press Enter after each command.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Method 3: Reset the Windows Updates Components.
Registry disclaimer: this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it.
Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.
Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands in command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services.
Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it.
Now you may try running the Windows Updates.
Other voices:
1. Perform a clean boot in Windows to determine what conflict is causing the problem.
2. Temporarily disable antivirus software (and any other security software) and firewall on your computer.
Note: Make sure you re-enable the antivirus software, other security programs, and firewall afterwards.
3. For Windows 7 users, try the below steps:
3.1 System Update Readiness Tool below in accordance with your system type:
Download the 64 bit version of System Update Readiness Tool ()@ goo.gl/x8GcN.
Download the 32 bit version of System Update Readiness Tool@ goo.gl/8LJDbz.
3.2 Run System File Checker (sfc /scannow).
3.3 Once the SFC is complete, check your hard drive for potential errors.
3.4 Re-run the downloaded System Update Readiness Tool.
3.5 If the errors have not been cleared yet, perform a Startup Repair.
Please note this will require an original Windows installation disc.
4. Perform an in-place upgrade using an original Windows installation disc.
