First of all, run the recommended Avast Internet Security in this video guide and check if your Windows has been infected with malware.
Beware of fakealerts and/or ransomware (ex, Spora ransomware).
Solution 1: Perform registry hack.
1. back up or export current registry settings and create a system restore point.
2. open the Registry Editor and head to the below path@ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Lnkfile.
3. check if there's a string value called IsShortcut in your system. If not, right-click on space area, hit New > chooseString. Just name it as IsShortcut. Do NOT put any data in it.
4. navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command, locate the Default string value.
Make sure %SystemRoot%\system32\CompMgmtLauncher.exe is set as default.
5. Head to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\[app-name].
6. Locate ImagePath, and assure it has a valid value. For instance, it should point to the exe file that you were trying to open or run.
7. you customize the "Default Programs" setting yourself.
Other voices:
1. right click on the file and then select Open with. You may find all the possible applications that you can open the file with.
2. perform a clean boot. Remember to revert your Windows to normal mode. For power users, try ProcExplorer@ bit.ly/2vytYkh & Process Monitor@ bit.ly/2uA4B4h.

Solution 3 (works for XP): If you can't open any program on your computer (e.g., System Restore, Firefox, iTunes, ect.), try the below steps:
Open Control Panel > Folder Options > File types > press the New button > click Advanced.
In the file extension dialog box type exe. In the drop down menu locate and select application > click Ok.
Solution 4:
1. run Microsoft Fixit tool@ bit.ly/2fCDrTv.
2. Check if you had KB2467023, KB2454826, and/or KB2502285 installed. If so, uninstall the above-mentioned update one by one.
