This post helps Fix error code 0x80071A91 while trying to install some Windows updates, or perform the system restore.
Case study 1: You could not update your Windows.
Possible solution 1:
step 1: use the Windows Update Troubleshooter.
step 2: check if you're using some third-party security program. If so, remove such an item using the recommended uninstall tool Pro in this video guide.
step 3: back up your personal data, and reset/restore your system.
Resolution 2:
step 1: Repeat the Step 2 in Possible solution 1 above.
step 2: run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter in Control Panel, and/or this one@ bit.ly/1i9EQIw.
step 3: If the issue still persists, reset Windows Update components (here's how to do that easily@ goo.gl/NyCi49 "Fix Windows Update issues with Reset Windows Update Agent").
Registry disclaimer: this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
Note: If the troubleshooter found yet can't fix some issue (eg., "Service registration is missing or corrupted."), perform the System File Checker scan (aka, sfc scan) in Windows Safe Mode (here's how@ goo.gl/5QN2af ), and make sure that the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under %WinDir%\WinSxS\Temp.
Possible solution 3:
Step 1: run the following command as the admin user:
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
Hint: This assumes that your Windows is installed in the default location, on drive C. If this is not the case, adjust the drive letter of the folder path to match your configuration.
Note: if this step did not help, try to delete the blf- nad regtrans-ms files from the %Windir%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine folder by running the below commands:
cd /d %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
attrib -s -h *
del *.blf
del *.regtrans-ms
Step 2: Restart your computer, and then attempt to install the failed updates again.
Step 3: If issue still persists, run Windows Update Troubleshooter under Control Panel.
Possible solution 4:
Step 1: Temporarily disable your antivirus software in your computer if you have any.
Disclaimer: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
Please note that this action will require the admin access.
Step 2: manually reset the Windows Updates Components.
For power users, run the following commands one by one, as the admin user:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
