Today our UninstallGuides Team wrote this post to help you disable or uninstall Windows Defender on your own Windows. This troubleshooting guide should also work for other versions of Windows, such as 8.1, 8, and 7. To do so, please read the very specific part of this how-to. Well, can you perform the 'uninstall' of Windows Defender manually? Yes, you should absolutely be able to get that stuff done. It's just yet another WARNING! Please do not continue until you have read the following sentence: to uninstall or disable the Windows Defender app, you would have to deal with some critical, hidden or protected system hives (e.g., Windows' Registry Editor and/or Local Group Policy). Even the smallest mistake on your side can easily damage your system irreversibly.
For a PC running an older version of Windows 7 and below, you can give our professional program removal tool a try now.
On the other hand, please look carefully at any other optional programs when it comes to the below term, Possibly Unwanted Program (PUP). Because PUPs can be frequently embedded in bloated or sponsored setup files, from so-called free downloads to shareware and to adware. However, there is a simple way to keep those foistware at bay. We can’t stress that enough: slow down your mouse, or always keep an eye on your left mouse button that most starters are unaware of!
Now, you may proceed to the troubleshooting parts.
Part 1: Here's how to disable Windows Defender on Windows 10/ 8.1/ 8 permanently.
Method One: make the best of Local Group Policy
1. Look at your own keyboard, press the Windows key and the R key at the same time.
2. Then, to open Local Group Policy, input gpedit.msc and press the Enter key whenever you're ready.
3. When the Local Group Policy Editor is opened, take a closer look at the below path: (hit) Computer Configuration > (expand) Administrative Templates > (expand) Windows Components > (look into) Windows Defender.
4. Double-click the setting "Turn off Windows Defender" on the left pane.
5. Enable the option Enabled and hit the OK button so you can disable / "uninstall" Windows Defender.
6. Save your work, restart your system. Then, the Windows Defender shield icon should gone until you re-enable the above the option "Not configured " to the setting "Turn off Windows Defender".
Method Two: Get the job done using Registry Editor
1. Open Registry Editor by pressing Windows + R and inputting REGEDIT.
2. Choose the Yes option from the below UAC window.
3. Here, we strongly recommend that you export current registry settings first! To do so, please refer to the below images: zip all of entries in registry, hit the File menu and, choose "Export..." option on the menu; then choose a proper location and back up your registry entries.
4. Now, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender .
5. If you don't see a DWORD entry that has DisableAntiSpyware in the file name, you should right-click on any empty space, select "New" on the context menu, and launch "DWORD (32-bit) Value".
And, name that key you created as DisableAntiSpyware.
Finally, set number 1 (one) to the "value data" section.
6. Restart your PC to make the change you made take effect. To reuse Windows Defender, re-head to said registry entry, change 1 into number zero 0.
Part 2: And, if you just want to disable Windows Defender temporarily, do the following:
1. Open Windows Defender Settings.
2. Turn off the toggle switch for the option "Real-time protection".
Part 3: How to uninstall the Windows Defender (aka, Microsoft Security Essential) on Windows 7 & Vista?
I. Troubleshooting steps that works for Win 7 & Vista
1. Obtain the admin access.
2. Cancel the virus update process.
3. Then, you may give the traditional uninstall method a go. Please refer to the below images.
4. Wait while the uninstall is being processed.
5. Shut down the "MSE Uninstall Wizard" above.
6. Refresh your programs and ensure the MSE has been removed.
If your computer is running Windows 8 (and above), you can use the built-in Windows Defender to help you get rid of viruses, spyware, or other malware. If your computer is running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP, Windows Defender only removes spyware.
