This post contains tips that help fix Please insert the external storage media and press OK issue while trying to install Windows 10 on your computer.
Solution 1:
disable (preferrably uninstall) any anti-virus (using the recommended uninstall tool in this video) -> reinstall that security program later when Windows 10 is installed.
ensure you have absolutely nothing extra plugged into the computer
before downloading Windows 10
Solution 2: clear the Windows Update cache
Before you start, make sure Windows Update is not currently downloading or installing updates.
1. do the below cmd codes one by one, using the admin access:
net stop wuauserv
net stop wuauserv
2. head to This PC > C: > Windows > SoftwareDistribution > Download (delete all)
open the DataStore folder and delete the file named DataStore.edb
open the Logs folder and delete all files inside it.
open the PostRebootEventCache.V2 folder and delete all files inside it
3. cmd codes:
net start wuauserv
net start bits
4. Reboot your computer and check Windows Update again.
Solution 3: Run Media Creation Tool@ go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209 or Windows7 USB DVD Download Tool & get the MSDN downloads@ msdn.microsoft.com/
Pre-requisite Tasks:
backup and restore your files
free up disk space in Windows
Other options are:
Restart a few times then try again.
Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.
If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.
If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).
