This post helps Fix Common NordVPN Windows Application Issues, such as "Error 1001", app crash/freeze.
Choose or browse one of the issues below:
1. Error 1001 during installation.
This error often appears when installing the NordVPN on Windows 7/8 systems which are not up-to-date. Please try updating your Windows system through Windows Update, then try installing the application again.
Also, try and make sure that your .NET Runtime is updated to version 4.6.2@ www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53345.
You can also try disabling your Antivirus / Firewall / security software, and installing the TAP adapter@ swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/tap-windows-9.21.1.exe (which NordVPN uses to create a VPN connection) manually - then installing the NordVPN app again.
For experienced users, you may also restart TAP adapter going to: Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings (one of the local area connections will have an undername TAP-Windows Adapter v9) -> Disable it and re-enable -> Try to connect again.
2. Crash / Freeze.
Press the Windows + R key combination to open the "Run" window.
Type in "services.msc" without the quotes, and press enter to open the "Services" window.
In the services list, find and right-click Task Scheduler, and then click Start if it is not running.
Do the same for Windows Event Log as well.
3. Kill Switch does not work.
In the Kill Switch application adding dialog, please make sure to add the direct executable file, instead of the application shortcut.
For example, you can add Skype to the Kill Switch list by adding this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe
4. Once connected to the NordVPN VPN server, there is no internet access.
At first, try changing the VPN server you are connecting to. If you are connecting by simply selecting the country, please try selecting a specific server within the same country from the servers tab.
Also, please flush your DNS cache by following this tutorial: www.refreshyourcache.com/.
The issue may also be caused by your antivirus, firewall, or other security software. Try disabling it (or even better, uninstalling it) and test if the issue persists then.
If that doesn't help, try changing the DNS servers you are using when connected to NordVPN VPN server. To do so, simply:
Navigate to the Settings tab of the NordVPN application.
Scroll to the bottom, click "Show advanced settings" and "I know what I'm doing".
Scroll to Custom DNS, and turn it on.
Click "Add another DNS", enter 8.8.8.8.
Click "Add another DNS" again, and enter 8.8.4.4.
Afterwards simply try to connect again.
If that does not help, try this solution:
Open Command Prompt with Admin Rights.
Then paste in this one by one:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh interface show interface
netsh winsock reset
After that, restart your PC ant try connecting to the servers again.
As a last resort, some of our users reported that once connecting with an alternative connection method (a tutorial for OpenVPN GUI can be found@ www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAEEwTnparM ), the NordVPN application started working for them again.
Of course, if the above solutions do not fix your issue, feel free to contact NordVPN support staff later.
